Introduction to Course/Expectations 6pm
Dinner at Nancyhands

Dublin was named for the Viking word "blackpool" (Dubh linh), b/c of the River Poddle (sp?) that flowed throughout the city. Sewage flowed in the river, contributing to the blackness, and the river was finally covered over. You can no longer see the blackpool.

The Vikings conquered port areas and established cities. When the Anglo-Normans came, they built over the established cities and kicked the Vikings out. You'll see more of that history in later days of this journal.

  • Isn't Ireland supposed to be green? According to Gabriel's Aunt Mary Jane in James Joyce's "The Dead," snowfall in Ireland is rare: "...we haven't had snow like it for thirty years, and I read this morning in the newspapers that the snow is general all over Ireland." We were there for the first snowfall in 18 years and, to be honest, no one seemed to know what to do with all of this "truly horrid snow!"
